My Approach

Many years ago, I was a scared and frustrated mom trying desperately to help my dyslexic daughter. After many tears, I found an organization that trained me in the Orton-Gillingham method. FINALLY, I had the tools to assist my daughter! In addition to OG, I read the book The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain by Brock L. Eide M.D. M.A. (Author), Fernette F. Eide M.D. (Author).

I discovered the need to find the pathway into each child’s bran and celebrate the GENIUS of the Dyslexic Learner.

What will your Learner do in The Genius Group?

Whole Body Movement OUTSIDE w/ OG instruction - 30 min

Using the large grassy field next to Wolf Creek Library, your Learner will use all of their large limbs (running, reaching, climbing, jumping) as we play OG based reading games.

OG Direct Instruction - 30 min

Inside, we’ll use letter tiles with OG direct instruction that is

  • Multisensory

  • Sequential

  • Incremental

  • Cumulative

  • Individualized

  • Based on Phonograms

  • Explicit

Genius Coaching Pillar One - 30 min

Learners will create Good Experiences; passion projects they ACTIVELY make happen, enjoy, do well and are proud of! I will coach them to discover their Dependable Strength i.e. their GENIUS!

Meet The Genius Group Founder ~ Karema Akilah

Karema Akilah has been teaching children for over 30 years. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Morgan State University, taught in Maryland’s public schools until beginning to homeschool her own 6 kids for over 2 decades.

She was trained in Orton-Gillingham to assist her daughter and many others to gain confidence and enhance their dependable strengths.
